Migration to Linux
With the limitations of the current dominant commercial
desktop OS, there is an apparent need, globally for
an alternative desktop operating system. Linux based
distributions are being accepted as a result of the
inclusive and open-ended dynamics. At an application
level, the most common and important migration challenges
will likely be the feasibility of migrating users from
the Microsoft Office productivity suite to a Linux-based
equivalent.
Why Linux
Linux has evolved into a powerful desktop operating
system that can run on already existing hardware. It
requires less memory and processing power to provide
similar performance on the client. Linux supports the
Portable Operating System Interface (POSIX) standard
that defines how a Linux UNIX-like system operates.
Linux provides a complete implementation of the TCP/IP
networking stack, so that programs that use TCP/IP can
be easily ported to Linux. Linux supports the standard
ISO-9660 file system for CD-ROMs, printing software,
multi-media devices, and modems.
Why Migration
Migration is an alternative, having properties that
compare favorably to the present situation. The properties
that are considered to take decisions are:
» |
Desktop Security |
» |
Total cost directly linked to the desktop client |
» |
Manageability of the Linux client solution |
» |
Client Customization |
» |
Open Source Software Philosophy |
» |
Ease of use of the client |
